Start with the Hero, Not the Story

This is my latest article in Nightingale from Data Visualization Society--their work is among my favorite -- subscribe and check out their new PRINT publication.

When you analyze data, start with the hero, not the story. This idea will strike a chord with creative professionals—they begin with their hero in mind. They wonder what obstacles their protagonist might face. What makes her act heroically? What's his mission? The same holds true for when you work with data.

Technologists might recoil: “I’m a scientist, not an artist.” Wrong. If you work with data, you need to think like an artist. Artists start by knowing about their hero and understanding their quest.

Thanks for the awesome #AI-generated artwork Jason Forrest and for the inspiration and collaboration Kat Greenbrook, Joshua Pine, Claire Santoro, Mary Aviles, and Amanda Makulec.
