Non-Obvious Jobs for Data Science Graduates: Data Humanists
Data Humanists jobs are growing as fast as technology jobs and there are four times more of them (they’re a blast, too).
"What is it that ONLY YOU can do?" According to ancient Stoic philosophy, answering this question is one of two tasks we have in life: to pursue an occupation we love. For data science graduates, that doesn't have to mean doing research all day. The nonobvious opportunity is that you can make any job better with data science.
Think of them as Data Humanist jobs.
Coaching graduates to explore Data Humanist jobs was our mentor kickoff meeting theme for this semester's Data Science for All by Correlation One program.
Data Humanists apply data to any mission. They require a mix of data science and humanist skills: critical thinking, curiosity, and passion. In the metaphorical ice cream sundae, data science isn't the cherry on top; it's the hot fudge that seeps into every nook and cranny of the bowl.
Every company is becoming a technology company, so every company needs Data Humanists and lots of them. According to George Anders in You Can Do Anything, Data Humanist jobs are four times more prevalent and growing as fast as technology jobs. He found that, over five years, the fastest-growing job sector was technology, adding over 500,000 jobs in the United States. In the same period, tech-influenced positions grew as fast and added almost 2,000,000 jobs.
Data Humanist jobs are everywhere if you know where to look: sales, leadership, product management, marketing, research, chief-of-staff, manufacturing, and finance — any job is better with data.
So pour your data science hot fudge skills on top of the thing that ONLY YOU can do, and watch your career take off.
